    Georgia Thornton Pickens

    November 13, 1939 - April 28, 2018

Georgia Thornton Pickens was born in Carrollton, Alabama on November 13, 1939 to the proud parents of George and Willie Haney. She was their second child and the first girl born to this union. She was nicknamed “Honey”. Honey accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior many years ago and attended several different churches while living in Alabama, New York, Boston, Massachusetts, Fort Wayne, Indiana and St. Louis, Missouri. After graduating from Pickens County Training School in Alabama, Honey left home and worked in several different fields in each of the states where she lived. She retired from General Motors Corporation in Fort Wayne, Indiana after 18+ years of service. Honey’s passion in life was gardening. Although she’d plant a few vegetable, she dearly loved flowers! She would work all day in her yard and grew beautiful plants and flowers everywhere! All of her hard labor would pay-off as her yard would look like a beautiful nursery. Honey always got excited when spring was approaching, as she knew it was getting closer to the planting season! She had purchased numerous bags of soil and was in the process of deciding on the types of flowers and layout of her flower garden when she became ill. Honey also loved figurines, especially Angels. She collected statuettes of Angels and has them throughout her home! Honey was a very peaceful and humble person that enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She had a “giving” heart and was always there to offer words of wisdom and comfort. She would do most anything to help others when they came to her with financial hardship issues and other problems. Honey never complained when loans were not repaid. If asked about it, she’d always say “Gods Got It,” and remain calm and peaceful. Honey transitioned from this life to her eternal home on Saturday, April 28, 2018. Her parents and four of thirteen siblings (Edward, Earl, Raymond and Henry) preceded her in death. Two other siblings, Ruby and James, preceded her in death, also. Honey leaves to cherish her precious memories: two sons ~ Anthony Thornton and Willie Thornton (Debra); a god son ~ Robert Towns (Lucila Godeniz); four sisters ~ Jean Mason, Wilda Haney, Linda Mathena and Janice Haney-Dowling; four brothers ~ George L (Delores), Willie G (Erodita), John (Van) and Rickey; five grandchildren ~ Chalandra, Chantalle, Jamie, Amber and Tonie; two God grands ~ Lucila and Robert Jr.; and several other relatives and friends.
