Earnestine Johnson's Obituary
Earnestine “Stine” Johnson was born on February 29, 1948, in Grady, Arkansas to the late Otis Johnson and Ella Mae Washington-Johnson. She was raised in East St. Louis by her mother and father, George Mitchell Sr., where she lived most of her life before relocating to Springfield, Illinois, in 2012. Earnestine departed this life on June 11, 2026, at 10:47 a.m. Baptized at an early age, Earnestine carried her faith throughout her life. As a Mother at Friendship Full Gospel Church, under the leadership of Pastor James Nichols. She openly displayed her unconditional love for Christ. Earnestine’s life was defined by family and sacrifice; she was a provider, protector, and caregiver who always put others before herself. She lovingly cared for her sister Ruby for many years and, together with her older brother, played a significant role in raising many of their nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. Earnestine worked for many years at Mitch Murch Maintenance in St. Louis, Missouri, before retiring. Gifted with her hands, she was also a talented hair stylist who loved doing hair for family and friends throughout her life. Throughout her career, she was known for her wisdom, strength, and tireless work ethic. She also shared many years of love and companionship with her life partner, the late Jerome Bradley, whom she faithfully cared for during his illness. After moving to Springfield, she formed close bonds with Fannie Smith and Margaretta Ball, who became like sisters to her. Earnestine enjoyed shopping, especially at Walmart and Kmart, and was known as an excellent cook whose meals brought family together. Her home was always open to others, and her kindness and generosity will be remembered by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her life partner, Jerome Bradley; and her siblings George Mitchell Jr., Harold Martin, Alphonso "Ricky" Johnson, and Minnie Irons. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Tammy Calloway, Jerome (Melvia) Johnson Sr., and Rashan (Danyle) Browing; her siblings, James Washington Sr., Ruby Brazell, and Jerry Chase Washington; grandchildren, Stephen (Elizabeth) Johnson, Denila Harris, Brishé Harris, Alexandra Anderson, Erica McNeese, Chazla Johnson, Jacia Johnson, Jerresha Johnson, and Jerome Johnson Jr.; several bonus grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends whose lives were touched by her love, guidance, and unwavering support.
