Lawrence Sayles Sr.'s Obituary
Mr. Lawrence Sayles, better known as “Larry,” to friends and family was
born on September 25th, 1941 to the union of Richard and Annie Sayles in
Saint Louis, Missouri. He was the baby of the eleven children.
As a young man, Lawrence “Larry” could be found boxing at the Gamble
Center, cutting hair and hanging out with his siblings and friends. Lawrence
“Larry” loved God, his family and he loved life. At an early age, he confessed
his faith and was a devoted servant for the Lord.
Lawrence “Larry” received his education in the Saint Louis Public School
District and later earned his diploma at O’Fallon Technical High School. It
was in high school where Larry met the love of his life, Casandra Swingler.
Lawrence and Casandra later married and their union was blessed with
children.
Lawrence “Larry” began his esteemed career working for McDonell Douglas.
Lawrence was later drafted into the United States Army; he was a Vietnam
Veteran who received two medals of honor. After the war, Larry returned
home where he and Casandra continued to grow their family. Lawrence was
now a devoted father, husband, brother, veteran, mentor and friend; not long
after, Lawrence added fire fighter to his extensive list of heroism. Larry
became a Fire Captain and spokesperson for the department. He was
interviewed after three alarm fires and was recognized throughout his career
for his outstanding bravery and courage.
Lawrence “Larry” was a lover of life and community. He enjoyed spending
time with family while hosting gatherings and celebrations at his home. When
Lawrence would get on the grill, you could smell the smoke from miles away
and that smoke would have complete strangers dropping in. Lawrence was
always the life of the party and his laugh would fill any size room. He was
patient, understanding and so easy to talk to. Over the years, Lawrence saved
the lives of so many and not just as a firefighter; he would provide counsel to
young men and women in his family and in the community. He was the first
person to show up and offer support and the last friend to leave.
Lawrence “Larry” departed this world on May 11th, 2024. Lawrence “Larry”
was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Annie Sayles; his daughter,
