Roger Hardieway's Obituary
On December 29, 1938, Roger Hardieway, Sr. entered this magnificent
world to begin his journey of service to his God and his country. Roger
was the fourth child to be born to Norman, Sr., and Evelyn Hardieway.
He came into a family that would have two brothers, Norman, Jr., and
Alonzo, Sr., and a sister Camelia. Several years later he would welcome
his younger sister, Edwina, to the family. He attended Catholic
Elementary Schools and McBride Catholic High School, now known as
Christian Brothers College High School, then on to Saint Louis
Community College @Florissant Valley, University of Missouri Saint
Louis, and Saint Louis University.
Roger served a short time in the U.S. Army and later served in the
Reserves after deciding to become a civil engineer. He worked for White
Rodgers Westinghouse and Emerson Electric until his retirement. He met
his wife, Louvella Champagne, through a co-worker at Emerson Electric.
They married and had two children, Roger, Jr. and Carla Ann.
Roger’s life was full of service to others in the community. He designed
a Ham operator’s station KOHCH and became proficient in using
computers. He was an honorable husband, brother and uncle, whose
life was devoted to his family. Outside of his family, jazz music was his
love. Roger had a gifted ear for music and was self-taught. He played
flute, trombone, bass, piano and saxophone, professionally at many
venues in Saint Louis. Roger passed away after asking his sister Edwina
to pray the rosary with him the morning of January 30, he flew to his
heavenly home.
Roger will be truly missed by: his children ~ Roger, Jr., and Carla Ann;
his sister ~ Edwina (San Diego, California); nieces ~ Janiece, Judy,
Anita, Lanita, Rose, Karen and Theresa; nephews ~ Norman III, William,
Andre’, Gary, Hasani, Alonzo, Jr., Terry, Carl, Jr. and Seth; in-laws ~
Harvey, Lottie, Shelda, Brenda, Delana and Woodrow; as well as a host
of great nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws across the country.
