Velma Redden's Obituary
Mrs. Velma Redden was born on December 19, 1949 to the union of
James and Beatrice Brooks. She was the second oldest of seven children.
Both of her parents, two brothers and one sister preceded her in death.
Velma was educated in the St. Louis Public School system, and graduated
from Sumner High School in 1967. Velma was united in holy matrimony on
January 17, 1970 to her best friend, John Nathan Redden. To this union
three children were born. Velma was a devoted and dutiful wife. Family
oriented, community conscious and generous, Velma and John opened
their home and hearts to relatives and friends in need throughout their
lives. In the true spirit of Christianity, she gave her love, energy, time and
resources to take care of others. With a little, she made a lot, stretching
what they had to serve and give. John was a faithful, devoted, loving, and
caring husband for 41 years until the day God called him home on February
25, 2011.
Velma accepted Christ at an early age. She rededicated her life and was
born again in 1977 under the leadership of Rev. Andrew Lee Smith,
becoming a dedicated member of Rising Star M.B. Church. She sang in the
Young Adult Choir and served as secretary for many years, a position which
she treasured. Always reliable, she took her duties very seriously and
jumped at the chance to support the church. She continued to carry God’s
word in her heart until the day He called her home.
Velma had a zest for life and was always full of laughter and cheer,
wherever she went. She worked in healthcare for years, and retired in 2008
after working at Barnes-Jewish Hospital for over 25 years. While at BJC she
received many awards and honors for her strong work ethic and
professionalism. She also enjoyed traveling, good friends, shopping, and
new adventures.
A fun, loving, and dedicated daughter, wife, sister, mother, cousin, and
great friend to all who knew her well, many will remember Velma Redden
for being sassy, spirited and strong.
