Walterene Beatrice Dougherty's Obituary
Walterene Beatrice Freeman–Dougherty, affectionately known as “Penny” born to Walter Bart Freeman and Lula Ethel Browning-Freeman on September 1, 1924 the second of four children, Wesley, Inez, Shirley and one step-sister Ella Mae. Walterene was baptized into the Catholic faith at the age of seven. She attended St. Nicholas Grade School and St. Joseph High School. Walterene found satisfaction in her career choice as an LPN. She retired after many years of dedicated service.
Walterene and Thomas C. Dougherty were united in marriage for forty-four years. Thomas and Glenn preceded her in death. Walterene leaves to cherish her memory: William, Sharon, Darlene, Diane (Elijah) and Herbert; many beloved grandchildren; great grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and a host of relatives and friends.
Walterene was energetic early in life as a girl scout, as an adult, she was a competitive bowler, earning multiple trophies, while also being an avid bingo player. Penny had a passion for cooking, she’d often mention how she enjoyed good tasting food. Among her church activities she was a long standing member of “Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange Ct. 343”, Walterene then was invited to become a Meritorious Gracious Lady of 4th Degree spanning her tenure from 1994 until her passing.
Penny enjoyed being a mother creating great memories throughout the years. She said “raising my six children gives me joy”.
Walterene “Penny” was not afraid, her transition was peaceful. She praised God for the amazing life He blessed her to experience. Surrounding her with love; were her five children, as she ended her earthly journey.
