Ronald Jenkins has been my neighbor and friend for at least 30 years. He was truly an icon and staple of the neighborhood. We have shared many laughs and sitting on the porch after a day's labor was somewhat of a ritual. Ronald was smart, caring, witty, dedicated and a real soldier. He took excellent care of his mother and never complained.....oh he was tired sometimes but as he would say "you have to do what you have to do". Ronald loved his family and friends and would likely give you the shirt off his back. Ronald's love of gardening was tremendous and he took pride in eating from the earth, tilling, planting and harvesting his crops which he generously shared with me and Delancey.......even giving us vegetables to grow. To say I will miss him is an understatement. I can barely sit on the porch right now because I expect to see him coming out of his mother's house, going inside his house to get his chair and coming back out to sit where he could see both ends of the block. He seemed to know everything that was going on in the neighborhood and everyone respected him. I will truly miss his greeting...."What's happening babe, you made it!!" (Referring to my work week). Things will never be the same but I wish the Lord to take care of his family and friends and lift them up with joy in the fact that our Heavenly Father has lifted Ronald up and he is flying with the Angels and resting in peace. He will remain in our hearts.
